對哥倫布及其航行美洲的評價，歷史學界一直就有爭論，題目中代表兩種對立的觀點。

“印第安人”認為：哥倫布是一個惡魔，必須全盤否定。
理由是他給印第安人帶來了破壞和掠奪。

“歐洲人”認為哥倫布是一個功臣，必須充分肯定。理由是他發現美洲新大陸具有劃時代意義，加強了世界各地區各民族之間的聯繫，世界市場開始形成，從而推動世界的文明進程。歷史評價要求全面、客觀、公正。哥倫布遠航美洲給印第安人帶來了巨大災難，加劇了他們的貧窮和落後，同時在客觀上使掠奪的財富成為資本的原始積累，推動了資本主義的發展，有其進步性。
